The National Movement Against the Park Geun-hye Government, which led the candlelight demonstrations calling for the former president's impeachment, will gather once again on October 28 with candles in hand to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the candlelight rallies. The movement said, "Only 2% of the reform tasks that the citizens with candles had ordered have been completed."

The movement held a press conference to declare the one-year anniversary of the candlelight demonstrations in front of the stairs of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Jongno-gu, Seoul at 1:30 p.m. on October 23 and announced that they would hold a candlelight demonstration on the theme, "The Candles Continue to Burn" at Gwanghwamun Square, Seoul on October 28.

The movement announced, "We will hold candles once again at Gwanghwamun Square to commemorate the historic struggle of 17 million candles that revived the weak embers of democracy and call for social reforms and the eradication of long-established irregularities, an order from the people with candles in hand."

In particular, the movement argued, "Among the one hundred tasks that the candlelight citizens had called for including reforms to the chaebol, public investigative and governing bodies, the electoral system, and the press, and the strengthening of basic labor rights, minority rights, and public welfare, only two뾲he arrest of Lee Jae-yong, vice chairman of Samsung, and the banning of expedient practices in the Prosecution Service and Cheong Wa Dae뾥ave been realized."

Park Seok-un, the head of the Korea Alliance for Progressive Movement, said, "Among the one hundred tasks that the movement released last February, only 58 were partially included in the one hundred major tasks announced by the Moon Jae-in government. Also among the one hundred tasks, there were a total of 69 that could have been resolved by legislation in the National Assembly, but not one has been realized." Park said, "Some opposition parties define efforts to root out long-established irregularities as political retaliation and refuse social reforms. The obstacle blocking the eradication of long-established bad practices and social reforms, the key of the candlelight spirit, is the National Assembly. The candlelight must spread to the National Assembly."

During the candlelight rally that will begin at 6 p.m. at Gwanghwamun Square on October 28, a stage will be prepared for citizens to freely speak up after the screening of a video recording of last year's candlelight demonstrations. Singers who stood on stage at last year's rally, Jeon In-kwon, Lee Sang-eun, Kwon Jin-won, the Peace Tree Choir, musical actors and the April 16 Family Choir will take to the stage once again.
