A picture of Myung Tae-gyun
Myung Tae-gyun, a key figure in President Yoon Suk-yeol's alleged meddling in the general election, said that if he were to be investigated by the prosecutor, he would ask the prosecutor, “’Can you handle it?’ because it would only take a month for Yoon to be impeached.“ Myung also claimed that First Lady Kim Keon-hee personally proposed him to participate in the Presidential Transition Committee, and that after Yoon took office, an employee of the presidential office visited him and said, "You can use the president's name for seeking publicity.”
"Whether (the prosecution) will arrest him or not, he will step down in a month and it will be impeached, will he be able to handle it?" Myung said in an interview with Channel A on October 7. "I will tell him to do it if he is dealt with." It is interpreted as an argument that the prosecution will not be able to easily see him because he can impeach the president through his own disclosure.
He also mentioned the possibility that there are additional Telegram conversations with Kim on other cell phones. “I change my cell phone every six months,” Myung said, ”so I have multiple phones and the other Telegrams are probably on those phones.” Earlier, prosecutors raided Myung's home in Changwon and the Future Korea Research Center, a polling firm Myung allegedly ran, on September 30. Six phones belonging to Myung and his family were reportedly seized in the raids. He also said that Kim had called him and asked him to “come to the takeover as soon as possible,” but that he refused, saying, "I am a person who raises and delivers chickens, and there are many people who can process chickens."
Myung also claimed that he had given various political advice to Yoon and his wife. Regarding the investigation into the family of former President Moon Jae-in, he told JTBC that he advised the government to set the time after the general election, saying, "We should do something about Moon after the general election. What would we do if we did it from the beginning?"
He also revealed that he has emphasized his friendship with Yoon because the presidential office understood. He claimed that about six months after Yoon's inauguration, an employee of the Office of Public Service Discipline Secretary came to Changwon and said, "Since you made so many contributions during the period of presidential election, you can use the name of the president and the first lady for seeking publicity."
Myung denied the controversial recording of Kim saying, “Did you get a call from oppa?” was “nonsense.” He said, "Wouldn't she call ‘oppa’ to the person whom she met over work?" She always said like a candidate or an elected person." Kang Hye-kyung, who was the accounting manager for former lawmaker Kim Young-sun's office earlier, said she heard several recordings of Kim's phone call to Myung ahead of the by-election in June 2022, saying, "You got a phone call from oppa, right? It's going to be fine."
In an interview with the Dong-A Ilbo published earlier in the day, Myung claimed that Yoon, who had been instrumental in the elections of Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and former People's Power leader Lee Joon-seok, had sent people to him. Myung also claimed to have visited Yoon's residence countless times, and that he recommended Choi Jae-hyung, the former head of the National Audit Office, to Yoon and his wife as the first prime minister. He also claimed that he was responsible for Yoon's unity with Ahn Cheol-soo of the People's Power Party in the last presidential election and that the president offered him a public office.
A senior official at the presidential office said, "Myung and Yoon are not close at all. He is just one of the people Yoon met when he just started politics." The official added, "I understand that Myung visited Yoon's home in Seocho-dong, Seoul, with a well-known politician from the People’s Power Party to greet him in between late June and early July 2021."
The official said, “It's not that Myung was a frequent visitor to Yoon's residence, and it's not that he gave any special political advice. I think the president drew a line before the presidential election began in earnest. Of course, there was no communication after the president took office.”
