On the 3rd, President Lee said, “I am convinced that it is the Korean people, who overcame an unprecedented crisis of democracy in world history by peaceful means, who fully deserve to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.”
Marking one year since the 12·3 illegal martial law, President Lee made these remarks in a special address to the nation, saying, “If the Korean people were to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for saving democracy, restoring peace, and letting the entire world know the greatness of democracy, it would be a major turning point for all countries shaken by conflict and division.”
He said, “The fact that our people repelled the illegal martial law and drove out unjust power through peaceful means, in accordance with the procedures set by the Constitution and the law, is an epochal event that will be long remembered in the history of world democracy.”
He announced, “The people’s sovereignty government born of the Revolution of Light will designate December 3 as ‘People’s Sovereignty Day’ to honor the great courage and actions of our people.”
He added, “For as long as the Republic of Korea exists, we will commemorate together the defense of constitutional order and democracy, and use this as an occasion to pledge an even sturdier democracy.”
