HD Construction Equipment will unveil a 22-liter-class large hydrogen engine for the first time at the largest hydrogen industry exhibition in Korea.
HD Construction Equipment said it will participate in ‘World Hydrogen Expo 2025’ (WHE2025), to be held at KINTEX in Ilsan, Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, from the 4th to the 7th, and will exhibit the 11ℓ-class hydrogen engine ‘HX12’ and the 22ℓ-class large hydrogen engine ‘HX22’.
HX22 is the largest hydrogen engine in the world that HD Construction Equipment is unveiling for the first time. With a ‘V-type’ 12-cylinder configuration, its maximum output is 600㎾ (816 horsepower) and its continuous output is 477㎾ (649 horsepower). HD Construction Equipment is reviewing development so that the HX22 can be used as a hydrogen generator at the district and village level. HD Construction Equipment explained, “(HX22) can meet the annual electricity demand of about 200 households,” and “it is being developed with the goal of taking the lead in the zero-carbon, eco-friendly power generation market that uses green hydrogen and hydrogen from ammonia cracking as fuel.”
The HX22 completed its first start-up ceremony at the Gunsan plant on November 12. It has now entered the demonstration phase for durability, performance, and safety, and the timing for mass production has not yet been disclosed.
The 11ℓ-class hydrogen engine ‘HX12’ has already completed verification of performance and durability through more than 1,500 hours of demonstration operation with hydrogen-engine generators and installation tests on heavy-duty trucks and excavators. HD Construction Equipment is aiming for mass production of the HX12 by the end of next year, and plans to promote commercialization of a hydrogen-engine truck in 2027, a hydrogen-engine generator in 2029, and a hydrogen-engine excavator in 2030.
Lim Hyeong-taek, head of the engine business division at HD Construction Equipment, said, “This exhibition is a venue to introduce the status of zero-carbon hydrogen engine development that HD Construction Equipment is pursuing independently,” and added, “Based on world-class technological capabilities, we plan to gradually expand the scope of hydrogen engine applications in power generation and mobility.”
WHE2025 is a hydrogen industry event in which international hydrogen companies participate. Along with major Korean companies, a total of 250 companies from 20 countries, including the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, are expected to participate.
