The professional baseball team Hanwha Eagles seem to have forgotten how to lose.
With their latest 8-0 victory over the Kiwoom Heroes at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, on May 11, the team extended their winning streak to 12 games, just two shy of the club’s all-time record of 14 straight wins.
The last time the Eagles won 12 games in a row was on May 23, 1992, during a game against the Ssangbangwool Raiders in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. Back then, playing under their former name Binggrae Eagles, the team added two more wins to set their historic 14-game streak. Now, the Eagles are closing in on that record.
Momentum continues to build with each victory. While the early wins in the streak were narrowly decided by one or two runs, three of the last four wins have been by margins of four runs or more, signaling the team's increasing dominance.
The Eagles took the lead early in the third inning and steadily added runs throughout the game against the Heroes. Even in the ninth, when they were already up 5-0, Hwang Young-mook, Moon Hyun-bin, and Noh Si-hwan delivered extra-base hits to tack on three more runs.
Starting pitcher Ryan Weiss notched his sixth win of the season with a near-flawless performance. Over eight innings, Weiss threw 93 pitches, gave up just one hit, walked two batters, and struck out nine in a scoreless outing.
“After the eighth, guys like Moon Dong-ju, Cody Ponce, Eom Sang-baek, and Ryu Hyun-jin were joking, asking why I didn’t go for one more inning since I only threw 93 pitches,” Weiss said with a laugh. “But the manager said he thought that was enough, and I agreed.”
Weiss noted the dramatic change in team atmosphere compared to last year. “There’s a lot more adrenaline now that we’re playing winning baseball. The players are encouraging and helping each other a lot,” he said. “The five starting pitchers are really supporting one another not just as players, but on a human level.”
Weiss joined the Eagles June last year as a replacement for Ricardo Sánchez and has since become one half of the team’s elite one-two punch alongside ace Cody Ponce. After posting a 5-5 record with a 3.73 ERA over 16 games last season, Weiss has already picked up six wins in just eight starts this year.
The Eagles’ manager Kim Kyung-moon praised Weiss after the game. “His dominant pitching shut down the opposing lineup and allowed us to take control. I want to commend Weiss for his outstanding performance.”
The Heroes batters had no answer for Weiss’ commanding pitching. Choi Joo-hwan's first-inning hit ended up being the Kiwoom's only one of the game.
Meanwhile, the Eagles’ offense stayed hot, racking up 11 hits including a solo home run by Lee Jin-young. Hwang Young-mook had a standout game with two hits and two runs. The team also made an impact on the base paths, with Moon Hyun-bin, Noh Si-hwan, and Lee Won-seok each stealing a base.
Gocheok Sky Dome was awash in the Eagles’ signature orange color, resembling a home game more than an away match. Even during pregame warmups, the Eagles’ fans filled the stadium with cheers, boosting the team’s morale.
Chants of “Mighty Hanwha” echoed throughout the stadium, and the enthusiasm did not die down after the final out. The Eagles’ fans continued singing team anthems and celebrating until the very last player left the field, savoring every moment of the team’s remarkable victory.
