U.S. media reported on the 10th (local time) that executives responsible for major electric-vehicle programs at Tesla, led by Elon Musk, are resigning in succession.
Siddhant Awasthi, who for three years oversaw the development and mass production of the Cybertruck, said in a LinkedIn post the previous day that he is leaving the company.
Awasthi, who joined Tesla as an intern in 2017, had moved in July to a role in charge of Model 3. Awasthi wrote, “Given the exciting growth opportunities ahead, this decision (to leave) was not easy.”
Emmanuel Lamacchia, the manager responsible for Model Y at Tesla, also announced via LinkedIn that he is leaving Tesla after eight years.
Neither executive disclosed specific reasons for their departures or their future plans.
Bloomberg noted that Tesla’s senior executives are leaving one after another to the extent that it could be called an ‘exodus’.
Earlier, David Lau, former vice president of software engineering at Tesla, moved to OpenAI, and Milan Kovac, vice president and head of Optimus engineering in the robotics division, also resigned. In June, Omid Afshar, a key Tesla executive and a longtime confidant of Musk, left the company.
U.S. media estimate that the wave of executive departures may be related to sluggish sales, as North American sales of Tesla’s main products, the Model Y and Model 3, have been plunging since the elimination of EV tax credits, and the Cybertruck has yet to gain a foothold in the pickup market.
Under the CEO compensation plan approved at Tesla’s annual shareholders’ meeting on the 6th, if results are achieved that include delivery of 20 million EVs, 10 million FSD (self-driving) software subscriptions, and $400 billion in EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization), and if the company’s market capitalization is raised to $8.5 trillion, Musk will receive stock awards totaling about $1 trillion.
