A man who subdued an armed gunman at the scene of the Sydney shooting is being hailed as a hero. His courageous actions are credited with preventing greater loss of life.

According to Reuters on the 14th local time, a video spread on social media that showed a man in a white shirt subduing a man in a black shirt who had been standing with a rifle and taking his firearm in a parking lot near Bondi Beach in Sydney, where the shooting occurred that day.

The footage shows the man in a white shirt, who had been hiding behind parked vehicles, charging at the man in a black shirt who was standing with a gun with his back turned and engaging in a scuffle. He pushed the man in black with his knee, knocking him to the ground, quickly seized the weapon, and then aimed the muzzle at him. When the disarmed man retreated, the man who had subdued him then placed the gun on the ground.

The man in the black shirt in the video was reported to be the same individual as one of the gunmen arrested by police. Reuters reported that another gunman was believed to have been nearby when the citizen subdued the shooter. The identity of the citizen who overpowered the gunman has not been disclosed.

Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia, praised the actions of citizens who ran toward danger to help others, saying “They are heroes, and their courage saved lives.”

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said, “One of the most unbelievable scenes I have ever seen,” and added, “He approached the gunman who fired at the community, single-handedly disarmed him, and put his own life at risk to save many people.”

At about 6:30 pm that day at Bondi Beach, a famous beach in Sydney, armed assailants opened fire during a ‘Beach Hanukkah’ event commemorating the start of the Jewish festival ‘Hanukkah’. Police and paramedics who received the report shortly after the shooting transported 16 injured people to hospitals, 12 of whom died. One suspect who exchanged gunfire with police also died at the scene. Police arrested and detained two gunmen. Authorities plan to investigate the motive and whether it was a hate crime targeting Judaism.
