On the 6th, President Lee Jae Myung criticized the far-right group that carried out an ‘insult challenge’ by touring the country and placing masks labeled ‘Tear down’ on Statues of Peace that symbolize comfort women victims, calling it “defamation of the deceased”.
That day, on his X, President Lee shared an article stating that the Yangsan Police Station in South Gyeongsang is investigating the leaders of the group and wrote, “Such brainless... this is defamation of the deceased.”
The Yangsan Police Station in South Gyeongsang has booked four people, including Kim Byung-hyun, head of National Action to Abolish the Comfort Women Act, on charges including violating the Assembly and Demonstration Act, property damage, and defamation, and is investigating. They reportedly last year put masks reading ‘Tear down’ on the Statues of Peace at schools including Muhak Girls High School, Seocho High School, and Busan Haneol High School, took photos, and held rallies calling for removal of the statues and repeal of the law to protect comfort women victims.
