The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has selected six ‘hot springs ideal for winter visits’ where visitors can enjoy warm hot-spring baths this season.
According to the ministry on the 6th, the selected hot springs are Pillye Hot Spring in Inje, Gangwon; Wonam Hot Spring in Goseong, Gangwon; Seolhae Hot Spring in Yangyang, Gangwon; Mungyeong STX Hot Spring in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang; Solsaem Hot Spring in Cheongsong, North Gyeongsang; and Sagye Hot Spring in Seogwipo, Jeju.
Pillye Hot Spring, formed in a deep valley area of Seoraksan, offers a quiet setting to relax while enjoying the mountain’s snowy scenery. Nearby natural spots well suited to appreciating winter views include the Whispering Birch Forest, Gombaeryeong, and the Secret Garden.
Wonam Hot Spring provides a vantage point over the majestic silhouette of Ulsanbawi in Seoraksan. With Songjiho and Hwajinpo, representative natural lagoons on the East Coast, visitors can enjoy landscapes where freshwater and seawater meet, and take part in security-themed experiential tours such as the Unification Observatory.
Seolhae Hot Spring, situated in the eastern forested zone of Seoraksan, features a gentle landscape where forests and ridgelines connect. Following the Yangyang Haeparang Trail, visitors can enjoy winter scenes at Dongho Beach, the Namdaecheon stream, and Naksan Beach.
Mungyeong STX Hot Spring is set in mountainous terrain where the Baekdudaegan ridge connects with Songnisan. With Mungyeong Saejae and Songnisan National Park nearby, visitors can enjoy winter hikes and exploration courses.
Solsaem Hot Spring, developed near Juwangsan National Park, is characterized by mineral water containing sulfate components. At Juwangsan National Park, visitors can also appreciate winter mountain scenery at sites such as Jusanji Pond and Jeolgol Valley.
Sagye Hot Spring, which opened in 2004 as Jeju’s first public hot spring, is located near Sanbangsan and Yongmeori Coast and features carbonated hot-spring water. Along the Jeju Olle Trail, the lava terraces of the Sagye-ri coast, Andeok Valley, and the distinctive volcanic landforms of Gunsan Oreum unfold, providing varied scenery along every route.
The ministry explained that the six selected hot springs were chosen as places to experience the beautiful snow scenes of mountains such as Seoraksan·Songnisan·Juwangsan, or to enjoy outdoor hot springs (open-air baths) while taking in distinctive views such as the East Sea and Jeju’s volcanic terrain.
A ministry official said, “The selection also took comprehensive account of the quality of the hot springs, including the inclusion of carbonic acid and sulfate.”
