First time the two moves have been linked successfully

Hyundai Motor Group said on the 9th that on the 7th (local time) its robotics affiliate Boston Dynamics posted on its YouTube channel a video of the humanoid robot Atlas performing a cartwheel and back tumbling in succession.
This is the first Atlas video since early last month’s world’s largest consumer and information technology (IT) show, ‘CES 2026,’ in Las Vegas, USA, where Atlas drew sensational attention by showcasing precise hand movements.

In the video, Atlas performs a cartwheel and back tumbling fluidly, like a gymnast.
Atlas had previously demonstrated a cartwheel and back tumbling separately, but this is the first time it has succeeded in linking the two moves in a row. It also completed the landing, the finishing action of the flip, smoothly and stably without the slightest wobble.
Boston Dynamics also released footage of Atlas walking on icy ground without falling. Hyundai Motor Group emphasized that maintaining balance and moving forward when the feet are slipping requires highly advanced decision-making and control systems.
Atlas’s failure footage was also released. By showing without filtering the robot falling or buckling while tumbling or walking on ice, they aimed to underscore how demanding these behaviors are.
A Hyundai Motor Group official said, “The video of Atlas’s consecutive flips confirms that its continuous whole-body control capability, performing the full sequence seamlessly from takeoff to in-air posture control to landing shock absorption to posture recovery, has entered a stabilization phase, beyond the difficulty of the individual moves themselves.”
Boston Dynamics plans to train Atlas systematically within Hyundai Motor Group’s manufacturing environments going forward.
