Over the past year, a cumulative 2,442,479,000-plus riders used the Seoul subway. Jamsil Station on Line 2 retained the top spot in boardings and alightings for the third consecutive year. Among all lines, Line 2 also carried the most people.
Seoul Station on Line 1 became the station with the largest year-on-year increase in boardings and alightings after the opening of the Metropolitan Express Railway (GTX)-A.
With move-ins completed at Olympic Park Foreon (12,032 households), the largest reconstruction project since Dangun, Deungchon-dong Station also showed a major increase, with boardings and alightings up 39% year-on-year (daily average 17,498→24,322).
Seoul Metro announced on the 10th the 2025 transport performance for Seoul Subway Lines 1~8.
The number of subway users is increasing every year. The growth appears to be driven by commuting demand based on the subway, such as lines extending into the Gyeonggi region.
Last year, an average of 6,692,000 people used the subway per day, up 1.3% from the 2024 daily average (6,605,000).
Line 2 carried about 1,988,000 people per day, the highest among Lines 1~8. Circling central Seoul and connecting major business districts, commercial areas, and densely populated residential zones, Line 2 is a core route where demand has been concentrated.
Line 5 followed with about 953,000 per day, and Lines 7 (856,000) and 3 (818,000) also saw heavy usage. These lines are characterized by connecting major residential areas and business districts in Seoul.
By station, Jamsil Station on Line 2 had the most, with about 157,600 boardings and alightings per day.
A Seoul Metro official stated, “Jamsil Station is adjacent to Seokchon Lake, and because large commercial and cultural facilities are concentrated in the area, the floating population is high even on ordinary days,” adding, “In particular, when you include visitors who come to take part in various events such as the cherry blossom festival or New Year countdown, the number of users consistently remains at a high level.”
Second was Hongik Univ. Station with a daily average of 153,298; Gangnam Station (152,232), Seoul Station (139,553), and Guro Digital Complex Station (106,880) also recorded high volumes, centered on representative commercial and cultural hubs in Seoul.
Seongsu Station (42nd in 2018), which had only about 56,000 boardings and alightings per day back then, recorded 102,489 last year in step with the rise of Seongsu-dong, climbing into 8th place.
The phenomenon in which subway boardings and alightings surge when a so-called ‘hot spot’ emerges was also pronounced at Ichon Station. Along with the frenzy for ‘Gukjungbak goods’, the number of boardings and alightings at Ichon Station increased by more than 16% year-on-year.
