U.S. President Donald Trump bluntly warned that allies that do not join military operations to keep the Strait of Hormuz open could face a “bad future.” He also said he might postpone a U.S.-China summit to pressure China to participate.
In an interview with the UK Financial Times (FT) on the 15th (local time), President Trump said, “It is only natural that the beneficiaries of the Strait of Hormuz help make sure bad things do not happen there,” adding, “Unlike the United States, China·Europe are heavily dependent on oil from the Gulf region.” He said that if European allies show no response to his request to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz for convoy operations, “it will be very bad for NATO’s (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) future.”
Trump also said, “I may postpone the U.S.-China summit scheduled for the end of this month to pressure Chinese President Xi Jinping to help keep the strait open.”
Asked what specific help was needed, he said, “Whatever is needed,” and, “Europe has far more minesweepers than the United States.” He added, “We also need people who will bring down bad actors causing trouble near Iran’s coast.” This is interpreted as meaning he wants Europe to join attacks on Iran through special forces or other military support.
