The Swedish government seized a vessel linked to the so-called ‘shadow fleet’ used to transport Russian crude and detained its Russian captain.
The Ystad court in southern Sweden issued a detention order on the 15th (local time) for the Russian national captain of the tanker ‘Sea Owl One’(Sea Owl One), the BBC and other outlets reported. He is suspected of using forged documents.
The tanker, which departed Santos, Brazil and was bound for Primorsk on the Russian Baltic coast, was detained by the Swedish Coast Guard on the 13th off the coast of Trelleborg in the south. The Coast Guard determined that this effectively stateless tanker was operating under a disguise by flying the flag of Comoros in Africa.
This tanker, 228m in length, is included on the European Union list of sanctioned vessels.
The Russian Embassy in Sweden said that among the 24 crew members of Sea Owl One, 10 including the captain are Russian and the rest are Indonesian nationals.
On the 6th, Swedish authorities also seized the Guinean-flagged cargo ship ‘Caffa’(Caffa), which had departed Casablanca, Morocco and was headed for Saint Petersburg, Russia. The vessel is suspected of transporting grain looted from Ukraine.
