Reuters reported on the 7th (local time) that the special envoy to Iran of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres plans to visit Iran as part of efforts to urge an end to the war.
Citing UN sources, Reuters reported that Jean Arnault, the special envoy to Iran, departed for the Middle East the previous day, and that the specific timing of his visit to Iran will be determined by local security and logistical conditions.
Earlier, Secretary-General Guterres appointed Arnault, the former special envoy on Afghanistan and regional issues, as special envoy to Iran. A former French diplomat, he served as a UN envoy in Afghanistan, Colombia, and Bolivia.
The UN recently expressed concern over remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump directed at Iran.
At a briefing at UN Headquarters that day, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said, “Secretary-General Guterres is very concerned about the statements made this morning following those made yesterday,” and “such statements suggest that the consequences of political and military decisions could be borne by all humanity beyond a single country.”
President Trump recently threatened to destroy power plants, bridges, and other facilities if Iran did not open the Strait of Hormuz, and that morning said, “an entire civilization would disappear tonight and never return.”
