AP reported that on the 8th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump said the Israeli attack on Lebanon was “not included in the cease-fire agreement.”
President Trump said this in a phone interview with U.S. public broadcaster PBS that day. When asked why the Israeli attack on Lebanon was not included in the agreement, he said, “Because of Hezbollah,” adding, “That will be addressed as well. It is fine.”
He also, when asked the question ‘Is it acceptable for Israel to continue attacking Lebanon?’, explained, “That is part of the negotiations. Everyone knows it,” and added, “That is a separate, small skirmish.”
These remarks by Trump align with the position of Israel. Israel maintains that the U.S.-Iran cease-fire agreement does not apply to Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, but AP reported that Pakistan, the mediator in the cease-fire talks with Iran, holds that it does apply to Hezbollah.
The Israeli military has said that under the two-week U.S.-Iran cease-fire agreement it will halt attacks on Iran but continue the use of force against Hezbollah, the pro-Iran armed faction in Lebanon. The Israeli military said it struck 100 Hezbollah targets in Beirut, the Lebanese capital, the south, and the eastern Bekaa Valley that day.
According to AP, the Lebanese Health Ministry said 182 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes that day. This is the highest one-day death toll in the war between Israel and Hezbollah.
Iran strongly condemned the Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon and warned it would retaliate if the attacks do not stop. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement that day that “the Zionist wolf regime, whose nature is to kill innocent children and women, has once again launched a brutal massacre in Beirut only hours after the cease-fire agreement.” It defined the military operations by Israel as a clear violation of the cease-fire agreement and a humanitarian crime. It particularly asserted that responsibility for this situation lies not only with Israel but also with the United States.
The Revolutionary Guard stated, “We strongly warn the treacherous United States and their partner, the Zionist regime,” and emphasized, “If the acts of aggression against Lebanon do not stop, we will inflict severe retaliation on the evil aggressors.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi formally raised the issue with the Pakistani side that mediated the truce, saying that the attack by Israel on Lebanon violated the cease-fire. AP reported that the foreign minister claimed on X that “the entire world is witnessing a massacre in Lebanon.”
