The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the 6th that it had sent a reply to a protest letter regarding Coupang that was sent by Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized in the reply that government measures regarding Coupang are proceeding fairly in accordance with domestic legal procedures.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United States sent a reply that day in the name of Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha to the joint letter from U.S. Republican lawmakers that raised issues of discrimination against U.S. digital companies, including Coupang.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “Through the reply, our government explained once again that government measures, including investigations related to Coupang, are being conducted in a non-discriminatory and fair manner in accordance with relevant domestic laws and regulations”.
It added, “Going forward, our government will continue to maintain non-discriminatory policies toward U.S. digital companies, including Coupang, and will continue to explain the relevant matters to the U.S. Congress”.
Fifty-four Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives sent a protest letter on the 21st of last month (local time) to Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha of the Republic of Korea to the United States, stating, “We urge an immediate halt to discriminatory regulatory measures targeting U.S. companies operating in Korea”. An official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on the 28th of last month that they were reviewing with relevant ministries whether to send a reply to the joint letter sent to the ambassador by the 54 Republican lawmakers.
