Amid reports that the United States and Iran are close to signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end the war, Iran said it is reviewing the U.S. proposal.
According to Iran’s ISNA news agency on the 6th (local time), Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said, “Iran is still reviewing the U.S. proposal to end the war,” adding, “We will consolidate Iran’s position and convey it to the mediating country, Pakistan.”
Regarding this, the ISAN news agency said, “It is worth noting that after the recent failure of the U.S. president’s ‘Project Freedom,’ U.S. media are spreading speculation and fake news to create a climate favorable to Trump and the United States in order to divert attention from the operation’s failure,” adding, “The U.S. outlet Axios reported parts of an agreement the United States is reviewing with Iran, but that report included excessive and unrealistic proposals that Iranian officials have recently strongly rejected.”
ISNA went on to say, “Some of Axios’s report amounts to media speculation and propaganda,” adding, “What Iran’s negotiating team is currently discussing is only the issue of ‘ending the war,’ and the nuclear issue is not being discussed at all at this stage.”
The U.S. online outlet Axios reported that the United States and Iran were close to concluding a one-page MOU that sets out a framework to end the war and resolve the nuclear issue. The MOU was said to include 14 provisions, including a temporary halt (moratorium) to Iran’s uranium enrichment, U.S. relief of sanctions against Iran and partial release of frozen funds, Iran’s restrictions on passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and a gradual easing of the U.S. maritime blockade against Iran.
Axios reported that the White House was waiting for Iran’s response on key issues within 48 hours. U.S. President Donald Trump said that day on the social network Truth Social, “If Iran agrees to implement the agreed items, ‘Grand Fury’ (the military operation against Iran) will end,” adding, “The Strait of Hormuz will be open to all countries, including Iran.”
However, President Trump warned, “If Iran does not comply, we will start bombing,” adding, “It will be carried out at a much higher intensity than before.” He also said in an interview with the New York Post that day, “It is still too early to hold face-to-face peace talks with Iran.”
