An effort is underway to designate as a Righteous Person a male high school student who was seriously injured while trying to help the victim at the scene of the murder of a high school girl in downtown Gwangju. The student heard a scream while walking, went to the scene, and was seriously injured by a knife wielded by the perpetrator; he is receiving treatment at a hospital.

Gwangsan-gu said on the 11th, “We are pushing to designate student A (17), a male high schooler who was seriously injured at the scene of the high school girl murder, as a Righteous Person.”

At around 12:11 a.m. on the 5th, on a sidewalk near a university in Wolgye-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Mr. Jang (24) stabbed and killed high school girl B (17) as she was returning home. A arrived at the scene at that time.

Walking on the opposite side of the road from the scene, A heard B scream and ran over to help. However, Jang also attacked A with a knife and then fled.

A was seriously injured and underwent emergency surgery at a university hospital, but fortunately his life is not in danger. He is still receiving treatment at the hospital. A and B attended different high schools and did not know each other.

Gwangsan-gu believes A meets the requirements for designation as a Righteous Person because he tried to help B, who died.

A Righteous Person is recognized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare after a review upon application by a local government. Those designated can receive support such as medical expenses and compensation.

Meanwhile, the Gwangju National Police Agency convened a Personal Information Disclosure Review Committee on the 8th regarding Jang, who was arrested on charges of murder and attempted murder, and voted to ‘disclose’.

However, as Jang did not agree to disclosure of his personal information, after a five-day grace period, the information will be disclosed for one month starting on the 14th.

The results of the antisocial personality disorder (‘psychopathy’) test of Jang conducted by the police are expected to be released that day.
