Rotates 180 degrees while holding a refrigerator…advanced whole-body control technology

The humanoid robot ‘Atlas’ from Boston Dynamics, the robotics affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, is now moving beyond flashy laboratory performances to reemerge as a ‘skilled worker’ on actual industrial worksites.
On the 18th (local time), Boston Dynamics signaled the countdown to commercialization by releasing on its YouTube channel a video of Atlas deftly transporting a 23㎏ compact refrigerator.
The most striking part of this video is Atlas’s precise ‘whole-body control’. To lift the heavy refrigerator, Atlas half-squatted to center its mass, then raised the object stably with both arms. After moving to a table, it fixed its lower body and rotated only its torso 180 degrees to set the refrigerator down, executing a high-difficulty maneuver. The company says this is possible thanks to advanced sensing that maintains balance by calculating the weight and mass of external objects in real time.
Boston Dynamics cited ‘simulation-based reinforcement learning (Reinforcement Learning)’ as the key to this achievement. Atlas derived optimal task paths and motion strategies on its own through tens of thousands of repetitions in a virtual space. It adapted to real environments in just a few weeks, and succeeded in carrying objects weighing up to 45㎏, beyond the 23㎏ shown in the video.
In particular, this Atlas model was designed from the outset with ‘commercialization’ and ‘cost efficiency’ in mind. The team simplified complex internal components, standardized actuators into two types, and gave the arms and legs identical structures to make part replacement and maintenance easier. This is seen as a strategy to realize ‘economies of scale’ through mass production and to lower the economic threshold for adoption in real production sites.
In the behind-the-scenes video released alongside, Atlas’s overwhelming physical abilities stood out even more. Standing on one leg and spinning 360 degrees or performing backflips showcased the robot’s flexibility and balance. The company explained, “These moves are not mere tricks; they are essential training to build the ability to recover on its own if it slips or falls during work.”
Atlas’s evolution aligns with the robotics vision of Hyundai Motor Group. At CES 2026, the group announced a plan to expand robotics technology from the lab into everyday life and across industries. To that end, it is accelerating the advancement of robot AI through strategic collaboration with Google DeepMind.
An industry source said, “The object-manipulation ability shown by Atlas indicates that the day when humanoids are deployed on real production lines, such as the smart factories of Hyundai Motor Group, is not far off,” adding, “The convergence of robots and AI will accelerate a major transformation of future industries.”
