Election-related illegal acts have been uncovered one after another in Busan and Ulsan.

On the 3rd, the Ulsan City Election Commission announced that it had filed a complaint with prosecutors against the accounting manager of the campaign liaison office for a certain candidate for providing free beverages to campaign workers. The manager is suspected of allowing campaign workers to drink bottled water and similar beverages worth about 200,000 won.

The current Public Official Election Act prohibits the campaign manager, campaign liaison office head, accounting manager, and others for a candidate from making donations related to the election. Providing money, goods, or other benefits for a candidate or a political party constitutes a donation.

Also that day, the Ulsan Nam-gu Election Commission said it had reported candidate A to the police on suspicion of underreporting assets in campaign literature and on the election commission website.

Publishing or causing to be published false information about assets to benefit a candidate is punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won.

Two campaign staff members who illegally distributed campaign name cards were also referred to investigative authorities.

According to the Busanjin-gu Election Commission in Busan, they are suspected of having, last month, scattered campaign name cards in individual apartment mailboxes within the constituency. The election law stipulates that campaign name cards may only be handed directly to voters.

An election commission official said, “Upon discovering any violations, we will conduct a thorough investigation and take stern measures, including criminal complaints.”
