The National Election Commission said on the 3rd that the provisional final turnout for the 9th nationwide local elections is 61.0%. That is 10.1 percentage points higher than the final turnout (50.9%) in the local elections four years ago.
According to the National Election Commission, 27,249,586 people voted nationwide that day. The total number of registered voters is 44,649,908.
In past local elections, the final turnout has topped 60% only twice: in the first local elections in 1995 (68.4%) and the seventh in 2018 (60.2%).
On this day, the main vote of the 9th local elections to choose a total of 4,227 officialsincluding 16 metropolitan/provincial governors, 16 superintendents of education, 227 basic-level mayors and county/district chiefs, 933 metropolitan council members, and 3,035 basic council membersran from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 14,288 polling stations nationwide. By-elections to fill vacant National Assembly seats were also held simultaneously in 14 constituencies, including Pyeongtaek-eul in Gyeonggi and Buk-gap in Busan.
