For the first time in Jeju, a father-daughter pair of provincial councilors has emerged.
According to the National Election Commission on the 4th, in the election for the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Council, Oh Eun-cho, the Democratic Party candidate (40) who ran in the district covering Jeongbang-dong, Jungang-dong, Cheonji-dong, and Seohong-dong in Seogwipo City, was elected with 40.81% of the vote. Her rivals, Kang Ha-yeong of the People Power Party and independent Kang Sang-su, received 34.34% and 24.84%, respectively.
Oh is the second daughter of former chair Oh Chung-jin (Seohong‧Daeryun-dong, Seogwipo City), who previously served as a Seogwipo City councilor, an 8th- and 9th-term Jeju provincial councilor, and chair of the Jeju Provincial Council. For the first time in Jeju, a ‘father-daughter pair of provincial councilors’ has appeared, with both father and daughter wearing council badges.
The Democratic Party designated this constituency as one subject to its mandatory female nomination rule and strategically nominated Oh. In addition, incumbent councilor Kang Sang-su left the People Power Party to run as an independent, and Kang Ha-yeong, formerly a proportional-representation councilor for the People Power Party, entered the local race, turning it into a fierce three-way contest.
Oh completed the Chinese program at the Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation at Jeju National University and worked at the Korea branch of the Chinese company Nokji Group. She later operated a coffee shop in Seogwipo Innovation City.
During the campaign, she put forward core pledges such as revitalizing the original downtown, building an administrative complex center in Seohong-dong, and improving the school commuting environment to win voters' support.
Oh stated, “My father always encouraged me to work with humility,” adding, “As someone who knows the realities of neighborhood small businesses better than anyone, I will pursue policies that can revitalize small merchants and the local economy based on experience gained directly in the field.”
