As a mixed martial arts UFC event is set to be held at the White House on the 14th, President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday, a lawsuit has been filed seeking to stop it.

According to the AP and others on the 7th (local time), the civic group ‘Public Integrity Project’ filed suit the day before on behalf of two Virginia residents, arguing that the Trump administration’s approval of the UFC event is unlawful. The defendants are the U.S. National Park Service and the Department of the Interior, as well as Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.

The group took issue with the fact that the event, which requires the installation of large structures, did not undergo congressional approval or an environmental impact assessment. It further criticized the event as likely to confer financial benefits on President Trump and his associate, UFC Chief Executive Officer Dana White. According to asset disclosures released last month, President Trump purchased between $15,000 and $50,000 worth of shares in TKO Holdings Group, UFC’s parent company, in March.

In the complaint, the group argued that the event is “using the White House grounds to host a private, for-profit sporting event and to provide various promotional and brand-exposure opportunities arising from it.” Brendan Ballou, the group’s founder and an attorney, called it “an extremely corrupt scheme to make the president and his friends wealthy.”

The UFC has said the tournament on the White House South Lawn is part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The event’s name is also ‘UFC Freedom 250.’ The Trump administration likewise maintains that, because the event is part of the founding commemoration, it does not require separate congressional approval.

The group counters that “in no sense can this event be considered a commemoration of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence,” noting that the date of the tournament is three weeks before Independence Day (July 4) and coincides with President Trump’s 80th birthday. President Trump is known as an ardent fan of the UFC.

The Department of the Interior issued a statement that day dismissing the lawsuit as “baseless and dilatory, intended to obstruct,” and “an attempt to prevent the hosting of what will, without question, be the most historic sporting event in American history.”
