The police investigating a case in which part of a body was discovered at a public recycling processing facility in Incheon are making an all-out effort to trace the routes of vehicles that entered and exited the facility that day.

According to the police on the 12th, the 64-member investigation headquarters of Incheon Yeonsu Police Station is investigating recycling collection zones and transport vehicles to confirm the identity of the remains and the location where they were dumped.

The remains were found at 2:28 p.m. on the 10th at the Southern Regional Wide-area Household Resource Recovery Center in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon, when a facility employee was sorting recyclables.

After genetic analysis, the police view the object found as human tissue. The leg discovered measures at least 40㎝ from below the left knee to the heel, with a foot size of 210∼220㎜.

Based on its size, the leg is presumed to be from a minor or a woman, but they cannot rule out the possibility that the body shrank after death, making it smaller than its original size.

The National Forensic Service earlier conveyed to the police an initial oral opinion that ‘it is not possible to determine the age range or sex of the remains’. A detailed examination is under way.

On the day it was found, the police identified the vehicles that transported waste to the center and are checking each collection area one by one. The number of times the vehicles brought in recyclables that day totals 34. By district, there were 20 for Yeonsu-gu and 14 for Jung-gu (including Yeongjong Island). In Yeonsu-gu, apartment complexes are included, whereas in Jung-gu, only residential neighborhoods and commercial areas excluding apartments are covered, according to reports.

Separately from the route tracing, the police are rechecking the list of missing persons and have sent official notices to each school to determine whether there are any students with long-term absences.
