A surprise dessert unveiled by Sungsimdang, the famed bakery in Daejeon, is drawing major attention online. It was neither an official new release nor a pre-promoted item. This is the story of ‘Mango Wareureu,’ which appeared in stores for only one day and then disappeared.
On the 10th, a chef-recommended item named ‘Mango Wareureu’ appeared at the Sungsimdang Cake Boutique. The cake appeared to make use of round sheet trimmings left over from producing the signature Fruit Siru series. It was sold with whipped cream and a generous heap of mango piled on top, as if about to spill over.
The price especially caught consumers’ eyes. It was 12,000 won. Considering that at many popular bakeries and cafes a small slice of cake now sells for 8,000 to over 10,000 won, many judged it to be very reasonably priced.
Online communities reacted with praise such as “The idea of using leftover ingredients is good” “It actually looks more appetizing than a regular cake” “Even if you buy a whole Siru cake, it ends up looking like that by the time you take the KTX home anyway.” Most agreed it showcased Sungsimdang’s consistent philosophy of value for money and practicality.
The Fruit Siru series uses seasonal fruit generously while keeping prices relatively reasonable, drawing attention each time. Flagship items Strawberry Siru and Mango Siru are so popular that long lines form with every release.
However, it will likely be difficult to encounter ‘Mango Wareureu’ again. A Sungsimdang representative said of Mango Wareureu, “It was a product conceived at the cake shop at the time and produced on the spot,” and explained, “It had not even been registered as a product, and the prepared quantity sold out, so it is not being sold now.” The representative added, “Whether to produce additional quantities has not yet been decided.”
Although it was not a formal product but a one-day experiment, ‘Mango Wareureu’ captured consumer interest with an idea true to Sungsimdang. By giving new value to trimmings that might otherwise be discarded and keeping the price accessible, calls are growing for an official launch.
