It was at pop star Taylor Swift’s ‘wedding of the century’, which set the United States abuzz. Under tight security, the secretive details of Swift’s wedding are gradually coming to light through the dogged interest of local U.S. media.

U.S. entertainment outlet People·fashion magazine Elle, among others, on the 5th (local time) reported in detail on the attendees, the officiant, congratulatory performances, food, and more from Swift’s ceremony held two days earlier. Swift and NFL player Travis Kelce’s wedding is said to have taken place on the 3rd at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

What drew the most attention was Paul McCartney’s performance. At the reception, he sang the classic ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand (I want to hold your hand)’, doing so for the first time in 62 years. The Beatles last performed the song in public at a September 1964 show at New York’s Paramount Theater. McCartney and Swift have maintained a friendship, including appearing together on the cover of the U.S. music magazine Rolling Stone in 2020.

Celebrities including singers Jennifer Lopez and Sabrina Carpenter, and actors Brad Pitt and Tom Hanks, were said to have turned out in force for the wedding. The officiant was actor and comedian Adam Sandler. More than 1,000 guests, including family, friends, and acquaintances, reportedly attended. Outlets also detailed the program and the officiant’s remarks, as well as the food served and the favors provided. Attendees were said to have signed nondisclosure agreements.

There has also been no shortage of disapproving views. While Swift held a boisterous wedding, traffic near the venue was restricted and security tightened. Shopkeepers complained of business losses, and amid a heat wave, power shortages led to blackouts or curtailments across parts of New York City. Perhaps mindful of such sentiment, the couple donated a total of $26 million (about 40 billion won) to 20 local·national charities ahead of the ceremony.

CNN said, “Swift has won goodwill to date through donations large and small and charitable activities. But no matter how much she gives, it was hard to offset feelings among those who saw this wedding like, ‘Holding a lavish wedding in a downturn like this’.”

CNN also pointed out, “Because of Swift’s thorough information blackout, we found nothing we could praise or evaluate her for,” adding, “The nondisclosure agreements, which are working exactly as intended, once again demonstrate her formidable power.”
