When worn for long periods, sweat and moisture become trapped inside the boots, keeping the feet persistently damp. Such an environment creates conditions in which skin diseases like athlete's foot or eczema can easily develop.
Rain boots, which invariably appear during the rainy season, have established themselves as a fashion item beyond functional footwear for keeping out rain. As designs have diversifiedfrom knee-high long boots to Chelsea boots and Mary Jane-style rain shoesthey are considered essential items for the rainy season.
However, selecting rain boots solely for their design or wearing them all day can harm foot health. Experts say we should remember that rain boots are not ‘shoes to wear for a long time’ but ‘shoes to wear briefly’ while avoiding the rain.
The first thing to check is breathability. Most rain boots are made of waterproof materials like rubber or PVC, which block rainwater but also cut off air circulation. Worn for long periods, sweat and moisture become trapped inside the boots, keeping the feet persistently damp. Such conditions make it easy for skin disorders like athlete's foot or eczema to develop.
It is best to avoid keeping them on after the rain stops or wearing them all day. Once home, dry the inside and outside of the boots thoroughly, and wear socks made of cotton or performance fabrics that absorb sweat well. Going barefoot increases skin friction, which can cause blisters, odor, or dermatitis.
Choosing the right size also matters. If they are too tight, they compress the feet and impede blood circulation; if they are too loose, the feet can slide inside, making blisters more likely. A product that leaves about 1㎝ of toe room without the heel lifting excessively is suitable.
In particular, check that long boots do not constrict the calves excessively. Excessive compression can impede blood circulation and increase discomfort from skin friction. If you feel tightness or pain when sitting and then standing while wearing them, the product is likely not right for you.
Weight is easy to overlook but is important. Rain boots are often heavier than regular sneakers, so prolonged walking can strain the calves, knees, and lower back. If you need to walk for long periods, such as during commuting, choose the lightest product possible and switch to other shoes like sneakers indoors.
For safety on wet roads, examine the outsoles carefully. Sidewalk blocks or marble floors that are wet from rain are much more slippery than usual. Checking that the outsole has deep grooves and is made of rubber with anti-slip features helps reduce the risk of falls.
After use, insert newspaper or a desiccant to remove internal moisture and dry them thoroughly in a well-ventilated shade. Direct sunlight or hot air from a dryer can deform or crack the rubber material and should be avoided. Store the boots only after the inside and outside are completely dry to prevent mold and odors.
