Analysis results indicate that the higher a monitor refresh rate is, the better players can perform in games.
LG Display announced on the 9th that it had presented a paper at an international academic conference on how the refresh rate of gaming monitors affects actual gameplay performance. The experiment found that gamers using high-refresh-rate monitors, which refresh the screen more times per second, experienced improvements in reaction speed and accuracy, and even higher win rates.
According to an LG Display paper titled ‘Analysis of the impact of refresh rate on FPS (first-person shooter) game performance’, the higher the refresh rate of the monitor used, the better gamers became at identifying objects in moving scenes, with reaction speed and accuracy also improving.
The experiment was conducted as a blind test with 31 adult everyday gamers. While playing an FPS game, participants randomly experienced four refresh rates: 60 hertz (㎐)·240Hz·360Hz·480Hz. The research team then measured quantitative indicators such as hit score (number of hits) and event interval time (the time from occurrence to elimination). They also surveyed qualitative indicators, including the smoothness of screen transitions, ease of tracking targets, and overall preference.
As a result, for hit score, win rate improved by 38% at the highest level, 480㎐, compared with the lowest level, 60㎐. Qualitative satisfaction also rose. Gamers evaluated that the higher the refresh rate, the smoother the screen looked and the easier it was to track moving targets.
LG Display explained that the characteristics of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) monitors based on high refresh rates also influenced gameplay performance. Higher refresh rates reduce input lag and motion blur.
Based on these findings, LG Display plans to enhance the competitiveness of its high-refresh-rate gaming OLED products.
