Enjoy Festivals and Escape the Heat, “Come to Our Hometown for Your Vacation”

It’s truly vacation season.

An abundance of summer festivals are being organized on various themes such as insects, films, eco-friendly experiences and agricultural products. If you check out the festival schedules, your vacation plans will be filled with more fun.

Summer festivals which begin in August start in the beaches of Busan and North Gyeongsang Province usually crowded with people trying to escape the heat. The Busan Sea Festival which has received great reviews every year begins on August 1 and lasts for a week in five beaches including Haeundae. The Bikini Festival, which attracts the eyes of the vacationers, is by far one of the best sights to enjoy.

An Insect Festival will be held until August 10 in Yecheon, North Gyeongsang Province, stimulating the children's five senses. Children can see and experience how the insects grow and live.

The Ulsan screening of the 2014 Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour (August 1-3) held at the campsite in the riverside of Jaksucheon in Deungeok-ri, Samnam-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan is a theater open only during vacation season and will screen films not easily found in movie theaters.

Twenty-five films including the story of the challenges overcome by a disabled person and of the disaster which results from destroying the natural environment are awaiting vacationers on their summer retreat.

For three days beginning August 6 the Squid Festival will be held in Ulleungdo, and visitors can feel and taste the squids. People can ride a squid-fishing boat and catch squids and sea loaches with their bare hands. The International Fireworks Festival held until August 3 in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province will decorate the night sky above the sea in Yeongilman Bay with more than 100,000 fireworks.

At Muchangpo Beach in Boryeong, the Mystic Sea Road Festival awaits (August 14-16).People can catch fish with their bare hands and experience the traditional fishing method “dogsal” as well as catch clams.

For five days beginning August 1, the Mokpo Maritime Cultural Festival will be held and a seasonal fish market, the climax of the festival, will be recreated after fishing. A fish market on the water, which will open by laying a 190m bridge between Samhakdo and Dongmyeong-dong Fish Market, and one on land, in the nearby Mokpo wharf will be open.

There are a rich variety of interesting festivals in areas other than the beach. Cheongyang, South Chungcheong Province will host the Chilgapsan International Calabash Festival in the Alps Village in Cheonjang-ri.In the vacation spots in the North Chungbuk area, the Concert in the Woods catches vacationer’s eyes. In the Minjoo Jisan Natural Forest Resort in Yeongdong (Aug. 2) and the Songho National Tourist Site (Aug. 9), a Traditional Korean Music Stage for Vacationers will be held. On August 2, the Mulhan Valley Concert will be held at the youth campsite in the valley in Yeongdong-gun.

At the Bungeoseom Island in Hwacheon, Gangwon Province, the Country of Water, Hwacheon Canoe Festival will be held until August 10. The Taebaek Cool Cinema Festival where people can enjoy movies outdoors will be held until August 3 near the O2 Resort. Yeongwol-gun will hold the Donggang Festival by the Donggang River until August 3 and visitors can catch trout with their bare hands, take part in a treasure hunt, ride rafts and go white water rafting.

The Hanurang Sagwarang Festival (Korean beef and apples) famous as a “clean” festival is preparing to open on August 29 at Jangsu-gun, North Jeolla Province. For three days, people can enjoy delicious dishes, view interesting sights and enjoy various experiences at Uiam Park in Jangsu-eup and in various areas throughout Jangsu-gun. Visitors must make reservations through the festival website (www.jangsufestival.com) in order to take part in the apple picking.
